what is a life coach?
A life coach is someone you hire to help guide you through the process of achieving a specific goal in your life.
Since that explanation is pretty vague, let me give you an example:
Imagine you’re a 34 year old woman who is tired of the never-ending cycle of starting and stopping a workout routine that never seems to stick. You crave a lifestyle where being active and healthy is “just what you do” but have no idea how to make that happen.
When you ask the key people in your life about it, you hear:
MOM: “Oh sweetheart. You are perfect just the way you are. You don’t need to change a thing.”
BEST FRIEND: “I know exactly how you feel. I can’t stand the gym. Oh, you can do it, I know you can. Maybe you just need to try harder? Why don’t sign up with me for that new yoga class I’ve been dying to try out.”
CO-WORKER: “You know what you need to do? Sign up for a triathlon. It’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Yeah, you should totally do that.”
COUNSELOR: “When you were in 6th grade, you were made fun of because you couldn’t run a mile in gym class. You grew up with the belief that you weren’t athletic and could never be fit. How did that make you feel?”
LIFE COACH: “Why don’t we take a look at what being healthy means to you and why it’s important to make it a part of your life. Then we can take a look at all the different ways you enjoy being active and find a few sports that work with your personality. Are there are any activities that you’re interested in, or would like to learn more about? We’ll also take a look at what’s been successful in other areas of your life and learn what motivates you both internally and externally. From there we can create an action plan you can take to integrate the physical activities you love into your daily life. How does that sound?
how does life coaching work?
Since there are so many different ways in which one can life coach, I’ll simply tell you how life coaching works with me.
- I conduct my coaching sessions over the phone (or skype) once a week. This allows me to listen super-intently to not only what you’re telling me, but also to how you’re telling me based on the inflections, pitch, tone of your voice and specific words and patterns of speech. It also lets us talk to each other from anywhere in the world (totally cool).
- I listen objectively and without judgement to your dreams and desires.
- I ask you a ton of questions to help us both get to the bottom of what you really want.
- I give you homework assignments to do every week to keep you moving forward.
- I hold you accountable for the commitments and promises you make to yourself.
- I support and champion the changes you want to make in your life. (And I’ll remind you to do the same.)
- I believe without a doubt that you have the answers you need within you. (You do, I promise!)
- I help you build the tools you need to stay grounded and centered when your negative Inner Voice gets too loud.
- I help you create action and momentum toward your goals with steps that work for you.
The center of my belief as a life coach is you. You, as my client, deserve to know your dreams are recognized, believed in and achievable. Life coaching is about your dreams, your goals, your challenges, and your successes.
what kinds of clients do you work with?
My clients come from a variety of backgrounds and have ranged in age from early 20s to mid-60s. But one thing seems to be a common thread:
They are all smart, passionate, wise women who have a strong desire to break out of the norm and live a more fulfilling, active, and healthy life.
My clients generally fall into three main categories (although I’m totally open to others):
Beginning and aspiring athletes.
You've never been super-active in your life, but you're ready to give it a try. You're tired of feeling fatigued and know that exercising is important to health (you're just not sure how to begin). You don’t believe you’re athletic and can’t imagine yourself an athlete, but you definitely want to find a healthier, more active way to live life. (Psst. This usually means your inner athlete is begging to be discovered.)
I adore working with beginners. Read more about beginning and aspiring athletes.
Adventurous women.
You have a passion for adventure and love your active lifestyle—it’s the rest of your world that feels out of balance. Whether you're seeking a bigger outdoor adventure, contemplating switching careers, or simply want to identify what's next, I can help.
I get totally fired up working with adventurous women. For more details visit the adventurous women page.
Women re-entering “normal” life after a significant event.
You are an adventurous women who is either planning for, or have returned from a transformative expedition (like hiking Maccu Piccu, climbing Kilimanjaro, or spending months traveling Internationally).
You’re feeling somewhat lost and want some guidance as you re-acclimate to your “before” life (while holding onto the powerful internal changes you experienced).
